As the only truly free app in our list (and it seems the only truly free pool app on the app store) we are prepared to cut Pool! a little slack here. Sure the graphics aren’t exactly amazing, there is no online play, not much in the way of table choice, we could go on but again, it’s free!
What it does give is your basic 8 ball pool table, a two player mode, reasonable physics that re-creates the game pretty well as well as cueing hints – great for those wanting to perfect their game away from the table. It also has retina support for the lucky few, although it appears that the latest update has caused a few problems for some users, it worked fine for this reviewer. Also did we mention it’s free?

Although this game is free, it’s one of those all too familiar ‘lite’ games, which in this case means its limited to three points per game, making the free version pretty much unplayable. However it does give you a chance to take the game for a spin before you hand over your hard earned two dollars, something you don’t get with any of the other paid games on this list (at least until Apple decide they might like to let us try apps for 24 hours first, so don’t hold your breath). Another apparent iOS port, Pool 3D is pretty much what is sounds like, another 3D pool view game. Although this game only features 8 ball pool there are different difficulties of play, and what we think really makes this game stand out – in game achievements. Although not normally seen in pool games, we think they make you want to keep coming back and playing and do give a sense of, well achievement.
The 3D is passable, and there are the usual different camera views and reasonable ball movement.
2. Pool Rebel+ by Compumaster ($2.99, direct link)
One of the original pool games to really take the iPhone by storm, since ported to the iPad and android phones, Pool Rebel is a well known name for touch-screen based pool enthusiasts. Now on the Mac, Pool Rebel brings with it many of the features which have made it so successful on other platforms.
To start with we have five different game types (including the more rare 9-ball and UK 8-ball), game load and save, game history, the naughty but oh so useful undo feature and of course adjustable difficulty.
Pool rebel also brings with it online playing, which is – as far as we have found – the only game of its type which can do this in the Mac app store. Of course the usefulness of this feature varies from player to player, but being able to play a real human rather than an often predictable AI player can make all the difference. After all you’d never play a computer on a real pool table (ok actually that might be quite cool).

Well first of all where all our other contenders have a hint of mobileness about them, this feels much more like it actually belongs on a full-on computer (although there is an app equivalent also available). The game taps into the higher level of graphical grunt available through your Mac over an iOS device and delivers the best 3D pool graphics we’ve seen in a game to date. The pool tables look realistic and the environments are detailed.
However above and beyond its graphical credentials this game is all about the options, and we mean lots of them! Want to play 5 red ball snooker? Sure. Maybe an L-shaped or hexagonal table floats your boat? Again no problem. Pretty much any game involving round balls, a table and cues has been incorporated into the game.
Add to that the achievement system we saw in Pool 3D, as well as one of the best ball control systems we’ve seen and you are looking at quite possibly the definitive pool game on the Mac. It’s just going to cost you more than the other four contenders combined!

In online mode, the game automatically selects three other real players to join your group. The four of you must work together to complete the campaign.
The full game increases the excitement even more. A versus mode lets you play as a bad guy. You have the chance to send infected characters after real players to stop them from accomplishing their goals. Scavenge mode sends you into a world filled with zombies and asks you to collect items in that world. There is also a survival mode that lets you see how long you can last as a swarm of zombies attacks.

Trying to live stream capture the HDMI output of my Nikon DSLR camera. I need to use the zoom lens of the Nikon for live streaming my video to a Zoom meeting. USB-C is supposedly Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 3 supposedly handles HDMI as INPUT.
I’m connecting the Nikon HDMI port which is working - I sent the video to my HDMI monitor to test. I then plugged the HDMI cable into a HDMI to USB-C adapter on my MB Pro. No external camera is detected on FaceTime or Zoom or iMovie or anything else I tried.
The Nikon camera also has an A/V out via USB. That does not seem to work either, via a USB to USB-C adapter.
I’m hoping to solve this via the right connector because of the Thunderbolt 3 aspect of USB-C. Trying to avoid buying an expensive HDMI to USB-3 video capture box, not knowing if that would even work on the MacBook Pro.

The Virtual Keyboard is tucked away in System Preferences. But once you enable it, you can easily hide or show it whenever you please.
Here’s how to turn it on.
*Open System Preferences.
*Navigate to Keyboard.
*Click on the Keyboard tab.
*Find the box that says Show Keyboard, Emoji & Symbol Viewers in menu bar. Click on it to check it.
At this point, you’ll now see a small Keyboard icon in the right-hand side of the top menu bar. You can click on this to actually bring up the Virtual Keyboard.
Once you do, you’ll see a digital keyboard appear on your desktop. You can resize it and move it around however you want.
When you’re done using the Virtual Keyboard, you can hide it away again by clicking on the Keyboard icon in the top menu bar and selecting Hide Keyboard Viewer. Alternatively, you can simply click the X icon on the Virtual Keyboard itself.A Few Things to Note
The Virtual Keyboard can be used to input text basically anywhere that you’d be able to type with an actual keyboard. It’ll helpfully “float” above any windows or screens you have open.
There is a limitation with the feature, however. Namely, you won’t be able to click keys that would be accessible when holding down the Shift or Option keys.
With that being said, if your physical Shift and Option keys are still functional, you’ll be able to input those keys and commands normally.Why Would You Use This?

Rumors indicate that Apple is trying out several methods that would allow the possibility of using a virtual keyboard with Augmented Reality (AR) glasses.
Apple is reportedly exploring methods of using keyboards with AR glasses or other types of head-mounted devices, which include virtual keyboards projected onto different surfaces. According to reports, the Cupertino-based company is developing a head-mounted device and virtual keyboard. While the device may be an Apple Glass with AR or AR headset, rumors also indicate that a virtual reality prototype device is already in the works.
In Apple’s patent application published on Oct. 15 with the title ’Keyboard Operation with Head-mounted Device,’ the company revealed multiple ways that a user may use physical or virtual keyboards with AR glasses, such as the rumored Apple Glass, or similar devices. Such virtual keyboards are projected on any type of surface. The patent provides some background on what such head-mounted devices are comprised of. For instance, the company explained the headset may have sports lenses and equipped with multiple cameras. The display lenses, which have vision-correcting optical features, may exclude a physical environment or overlay some information on top.
When users need to input text, they could use the head-mounted ’Apple Glass’ device with the physical keyboard or virtual keyboards projected on any surface. The text typed on the keyboard appears on the field of vision of the user through the head-mounted device’s display lenses. ’A head-mounted device can provide a virtual keyboard based on the arrangement of the user’s hands with respect to a surface,’ the patent stated. In the case of the virtual keyboard, the patent also stated that the device can detect where the keyboard is by determining the position of the user’s hands on the surface.Virtual Keyboard For Mac Download
In any of these situations, Apple says that placing a tracking device close to the hands of the user may input text to the rumored ’Apple Glass’ or head-mounted AR device. Apple said that this is possible through the use of inertial measurement units, hand-tracking systems, or force detection sensors. ’It will be understood that combinations of the above can be provided such that operation of the virtual keyboard is detected based on multiple detections,’ according to the patent.
The patent also revealed that the tracking sensors allow the keyboard to function without relying on signals. This means that typing motions are detected by ’Apple Glass’ or the head-mounted AR device, which allows the use of virtual keyboards projected on surfaces and without any electronics within them. The patent also stated that you can also use an Apple Pencil or other types of stylus pens with the head-mounted AR device to draw or put annotations on flat surfaces.
